Senator Pat Carney to Retire from Senate of Canada on January 31, 2008

Senator Pat Carney has announced that, after 25 years in Parliament, she will take early retirement from the Senate on January 31, 2008.

Senator Carney has stated that she is in good health, and that while her statutory term of office does not end until 2010, it is time to focus on her family, friends and writing.

“It has been my great privilege to serve British Columbia and Canada in Parliament. I have enjoyed the challenges and have been sustained by the interest and support of my constituents as an MP and by the coastal communities, aboriginal and non-aboriginal, which I have served as a B.C. Senator. I am also honoured to have served four Conservative Prime Ministers in a number of roles over the last 25 years,” said Carney.

Since she was first elected to the House of Commons in 1980 as MP for Vancouver Centre, Senator Carney has held a number of senior positions, including Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources, Minister of International Trade, and President of the Treasury Board. Since her appointment to the Senate in 1990, Senator Pat has also served as a member of several Senate Standing Committees, including as Chair of the Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources Committee, Deputy Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee, and co-chair the Ad Hoc Parliamentary Committee on Lightstations.

Senator Carney’s priority before retiring in January is to re-introduce two private members bills that died on the order paper with September’s prorogation: Bill S-215, An Act to Protect Heritage Lighthouses, (formerly Bill S-220); and Bill S-217, An Act to amend the International Boundary Waters Treaty Act (bulk water removal) (formerly Bill S-225). For more information about these bills, please visit “Senator Pat’s Priorities”.
