Since my appointment as Senator for British Columbia in 1990, I have been involved in a broad range of Senate committees and projects. In my Archives I've posted material from these activities that I hope will be of use and interest to you.

From 1994 to 1996 I served as Chair of the Standing Senate Committee on Energy, The Environment and Natural Resources. During this time, we completed two major reports. In the first, "Protecting People and Places: Conserving Canada's Natural Heritage", the Committee recommended ways to best complete a national network of protected wilderness areas. The second, "Pull Up! Pull Up!", documented public concerns about the safety of Automated Weather Observation Systems (AWOS) and made a series of recommendations for government action.

On the menu at right you'll find links to both of these reports under the heading, "Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources".

In 1994, I also co-chaired the Ad Hoc Parliamentary Committee on Lightstations, with my colleague John Duncan, MP for Vancouver Island North. Follow the "Lightstations" link at right for more information about the Ad Hoc Parliamentary Committee and our report, "People Want People on the Lights", as well as my speeches on BC's lightstations, and some excellent Canadian and international lighthouse links.

As Deputy Chairperson of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee (1996 to 1997), I helped create two reports, the first on the growing importance of the Asia Pacific region for Canada; the second on the economic integration of the European Union and its implications for Canada. Both reports are posted at right under "Foreign Affairs".

Also under "Foreign Affairs" you'll find my speeches and selected debate from Question Period in the Senate regarding the 1997 APEC Summit in Vancouver and the subsequent RCMP Public Complaints Commission Inquiry into the RCMP handling of student demonstrators at the Summit. I've also posted links to sites dealing with both the 1997 APEC meetings and the upcoming 2006 APEC Summit in Ha Noi, Viet Nam.

An important part of my work in the Senate is supporting the efforts of coastal British Columbians to rebuild vibrant and healthy communities and economies. Much of this work has centered around the restructuring of the Pacific Salmon Fishery and the impact this has had on B.C.'s coastal communities. Under "Pacific Salmon Fishery" at right, you'll find questions and speeches that I've given in the Senate Chamber about the fishery, as well as links to fisheries web sites and reports.

I'm also including electronic copies of my newsletter, Keeping in Touch, which chronicles my work in the Senate.
